Is the equipment the same for each category of snowboarding?

Each style requires its own specialized set of equipment

The alpine snowboards are are very directional (stiff, narrow and relatively long) and hard boots with high angles are worn
Freeriders generally use directional boards and low/medium angles
Freestyles use a relatively short, maneuverable board that works the same no matter in which direction the board is going. They will also run with low angles and soft boots.

Is snowboarding difficult to learn?


Snowboarding is hard to learn, but easy to master. - Skiing is easier to learn, but harder to master.
Don't have too high of expectations for the first day or two. Pace yourself and it won’t be painful. It will take about three days before you start to feel comfortable. Once you are comfortable with momentum and controlling speed, it becomes easier to balance.
Snowboarding is a great sport that kids and parents can learn at the same time. It's a great way to bring everyone together for a weekend escape, for a vacation or for school winter breaks. Many resorts are catering to families with young children by offering day-care centers and lessons/equipment rental and skill improvement programs to get younger children involved in this popular sport.
Snowboarding has been described as being very intuitive and natural feeling.

How do I get fit enough for snowboarding?

Keep hydrated and your muscles stretched out; bicycle, swim, hit the gym or do any other form of exercise you might enjoy. The important thing is to make it fun so that you will look forward to it and not avoid the work out. You don’t need to over do it, just keep toned up and stretched out. This will help prevent strain or injury, and you will certainly be fit and ready for snowboarding.
Quick reflexes and good balance are as important as physical fitness.

Could I get hit by someone else’s snowboard?

Snowboards are always attached by safety leashes or straps which are fastened between the front leg and the front binding or the deck of a snowboard. They are intended to prevent the catastrophic consequences that could result from a runaway snowboard. (A six pound snowboard hurtling down a slope at 30 miles per hour could be very dangerous).

Is snowboarding an Olympic sport?

Snowboarding reached Olympic status in the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan. It celebrated two events, the halfpipe and parallel giant slalom in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. In Turin, Italy (February 10th to 26th , 2006,) The Snowboard Cross will make its debut, representing alpine snowboarding with mens’ and womens’ teams taking part in the giant Slalom parallel, Half Pipe and Snowboard Cross.
Snowboarding is not only one of the newer sports within the Olympic movement, but within Special Olympics too. Snowboarding was adopted by the International Olympic Committee as an Olympic sport in 1994, with an inaugural Olympic competition in 1998 in Nagano, Japan.

Can I patrol on a snowboard?

There are many patrols who are anxious to attract snowboarders. People interested in Snowboard Patrolling should contact their local mountain's Patrol Director as soon as possible to determine whether they might be able to become a trainee (candidate). While the vast majority of patrollers are unpaid volunteers, there sometimes are a few paid positions available for newcomers, particularly at smaller mountains.
